VC = W × Vcom: Meaning, Limits, and Calibration

A conceptual equation

The equation proposes that observed value capture (VC) depends on a wellbeing-context term (W) and a value-to-community term (Vcom). Multiplication expresses a strong intuition: a claim should weaken when either personal or collective context is absent or strongly negative.

It is not yet a validated universal formula. Neither variable has one accepted scale, and multiplication assumes properties that empirical work must justify.

Interpretation before calculation

W may represent a vector of contextual signals rather than a single number. Vcom may include learning, livelihood, organizational capacity, externalities, and distribution. Aggregating either term creates value judgments that must be public and governed.

Calibration requirements

An operational model would need:

• explicit construct definitions;
• population and context boundaries;
• reference measures and uncertainty;
• sensitivity analysis for weights and missing data;
• inter-rater and test-retest evidence;
• cultural and linguistic validation;
• documented failure thresholds and non-use cases.

Goodhart risk

When a measure becomes a target, participants and institutions adapt. A wellbeing score can reward performative positivity. A community-value score can privilege visible outputs over maintenance or care. A product can optimize the equation while making lived conditions worse.

The response is not a more complicated hidden formula. It is plural evidence, limited consequences, periodic review, participant challenge, and the willingness to stop using a metric.

Appropriate status

For now, VC = W × Vcom is a research scaffold: a concise way to ask whether personal and collective context have both been considered. It should not determine payments, eligibility, diagnosis, employment, or public ranking.
